Meta's smart glasses are about to undergo a significant upgrade.
Meta looks to be trying another approach, and frankly, this
time might indeed be different.
Coming next is what?
Meta has been collaborating with Ray-Ban on their smart
glasses for some time now, and the talk among the people is that some quite
major modifications are in store. We are discussing spectacles capable of
considerably more than simply musical playback and snapshot taking.
Better cameras, longer battery life, and here's the
kicker they might really have displays built inside the lenses are meant to be
included in the new designs. Not those ungainly, overt screens that made Google
Glass seem so strange. These would be undetectable when you are not using them,
maybe even insignificant.
Why Should You Care?
Look, I get it. Smart glasses look to come out of a sci-fi
film. However, consider it for one. What if you might get directions without
your phone? Or capture a picture just by using a word? Or video call someone
while Are your hands busy preparing dinner?
Here is the commitment. Meta hopes these spectacles will be
like normal ones with smart characteristics. Not some techy item that yells
I'm wearing a computer on my face.
Ray-Ban's Partnership
Seems Reasonable:
Meta did not simply cram their technology into any ancient
frames. That was really quite smart of them: they worked with Ray-Ban. Ray-Bans
already cover individuals. Their appearance is nice. They are ordinary.
Therefore, adding smart capabilities to something people already enjoy wearing
is half of the journey.
The Ray-Ban Stories eyeglasses of today are very much like
Wayfarers. If someone had on them, you probably wouldn't even see them. Meta
needed to get right precisely that.
Privacy: What about
it?
All right, we have to address the elephant in the room.
Cameras on your face cause people anxiety, and they ought to. Meta understands
this. This explains the little light on the glasses that activates when you're
recording. It's something rather than perfect.
Regarding this material, questions will always abound. As these glasses become more widely used, we will have to watch Meta manages it. They will require precise guidelines regarding use location and non-use.
When can you get
them?
For sure, nobody yet knows. Meta has been quite silent
regarding precise dates. But should the allegations be true, something fresh
may show up later this year or early next year.
For what you're getting, the modern designs cost about $300,
which isn't unreasonable expensive but is also not cheap. The fresh ones? Not
sure. They will probably be more costly if they improve technology and add
displays.
My Perspective on
This:
I have been keeping an eye on the market for smart glasses
for years, and I believe Meta might perhaps pull this off. Not because their
technology is top notch; many businesses do. But as they are preoccupied with
creating glasses that people will actually wear.
That's been the issue all along. Everyone aims not to appear
foolish. Nobody wants to have clumsy devices with them. They have a chance if
Meta can create smart spectacles that resemble everyday glasses.
Will everybody want them? No, probably not. They don't need
everyone, though. They simply need enough people to believe yeah, that's rather
cool instead of wow, that looks strange.
The broad view:
Glasses are only one factor here. Meta is placing high bets
on what they refer to as the metaverse. These spectacles are meant to connect
our everyday life to the virtual world they are creating. Who knows whether all
of that works or not. The glasses themselves, however? They are intriguing.
Still at the early stages in all this. Your phone tomorrow
won't be substituted by smart glasses. Maybe not even next year. Five years
from now though? Ten years? Looking back on this period, we will see that it
was the start of something tremendous.
I only want to see what Meta reveals next for now. Should
they create truly practical glasses without being unpleasant or creepy, it is
noteworthy.
