Beyond Oranges: Unexpected Winter Fruits You Ought to be Consuming
What is the first fruit that springs to mind when the days
grow shorter and the temperature decreases? Orange, correct? We all reach for
them, hoping that Vitamin C would fend off winter coughs. And they are
fantastic! But there is so much more to the winter fruit universe than only one
little orange.
Let's look at several other delicious alternatives that are
at their peak during the colder months if you have been getting a bit bored
with your fruit basket.
1. Pomegranates: Little Red Diamonds
Really, is there a more lovely fruit? Opening a pomegranate
resembles treasure hunting. Called arils, those little ruby-red seeds have a
sweet, acidic flavour that explodes in your tongue.
Why they're excellent: They are brimming with
antioxidants, the beneficial compounds that shields your body's cells from
harm. They are also great for your heart.
Sprinkle the seeds on your oatmeal or morning yogurt to
savor them. Include them in a salad for a pop of colour and flavour.
Alternately, simply scoop them from a dish with a spoon like I do!
2. Persimmons: Nature's Honey Pudding
Have you ever stared at a persimmon and wondered what on
earth you would do with one? You're not alone! These juicy orange,
tomato-shaped fruits are a true winter delicacy. Most often, the Fuyu is sweet
and crisp and can be consumed as an apple. You eat the other type the Hachiya only
after it becomes incredibly soft and squishy; the interior tastes like a sweet,
custard-like dessert.
Reasons for Their greatness: Rich in Vitamin A, which is
essential for your immune system and eyes. They also give you a good dose of
fibre.
How to savour them: Dice a sharp persimmon and
include it on a salad or cheese board. Simply cut off the top and eat the
center with a spoon if you have a very ripe, soft one. It has a hint of honey
and cinnamon.
3. The Fuzzy Green Powerhouse: Kiwis
A kiwi boasts even more Vitamin C than an orange. Indeed it
is. One great way to improve your immunity over the winter are these tiny fuzzy
brown fruits with vivid green, speckled insides.
Kiwi is also good for digestion in addition to the huge
dose of vitamin C.
The traditional way is to simply cut it in half and scoop
out the pulp using a spoon. You may also peel and slice them for a fruit salad
or on top of a pavlova.
Grapefruit: The Energizing Wake-Up Call
Alright, this one is still in the citrus family but it is
the cool, edgy cousin of the orange. On a gloomy winter morning, that pleasant
but tart flavour is so energising. You're in for a pleasure regardless of the
sort you get pink, red, or white.
Reasons grapes are excellent: Vitamins abound in
grapefruits, and they are well-known to benefit your skin. They are also really
hydrating.
How to have fun with them: Simply chop it in half and
get started! If you enjoy it, a little dusting of sugar can alleviate the
bitterness. You can also squeeze the juice or add slices to a winter salad.
A rapid reminder: if you are on any prescription
medicine, simply check with) your doctor, since grapefruit can occasionally
affect it.
Therefore, this winter let's make a small pledge to
ourselves. Let's give something different a try. Walk past the usual pile of
oranges and grab a persimmon or a pomegranate when you visit the store next
time. Your body and your taste buds will be grateful.
Eat well and keep warm!
